Mathematical modeling

is the development of mathematical description of a phenomenon, a system or a process and their study by using mathematical tools. The description can be given in terms of a system of equations, an algorithm, a stochastic process, etc.

Gives a description of a phenomenon, system or process using mathematical concepts and symbols.

Objectives of mathematical modeling

• The study and understanding of the behavior of complex systems using Mathematics.
• The use and development of new mathematical tools required to solve a model.
• The prediction/simulation of behaviors and properties of complex systems through mathematical models.

Good models

All real systems – phenomena are highly complex and consist of, or are described by a huge number of parameters.

A good model

• It includes and predicts the known basic properties of the system.
• It does not include all the possible parameters that affect a system - but only the most important ones.
• It is not correct - it is significant.
